    Introduction

TP304 (UNS S30400) and 304L (UNS S30403) are austenitic stainless steels widely used in welded tubing due to their excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and cost-effectiveness. Both belong to the 18-8 chromium-nickel family, with 304L being the low-carbon variant (L = "Low carbon") designed to minimize carbide precipitation during welding.

    Key Features

    Microstructure
Single-phase austenitic structure, non-magnetic (unless cold-worked), providing high ductility and toughness.
    Corrosion Resistance
    • Excellent in oxidizing environments (e.g., nitric acid, atmospheric corrosion).
    • Resistant to general corrosion in freshwater, steam, and many organic acids.
    • Susceptible to intergranular corrosion (IGC) if sensitized (e.g., prolonged exposure at 427–816°C), due to chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries.
    High-Temperature Performance
Retains strength up to ~870°C, suitable for service in moderate high-temperature applications (e.g., furnace parts, heat exchangers).
    Weldability
    • Easily welded by GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SAW.
    • Use 308 or 308L filler metal to match corrosion resistance; post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is generally unnecessary for non-critical applications.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between TP304 and TP304L stainless steels?
TP304L is the low-carbon variant of TP304 (containing a maximum of 0.035% carbon). It is specifically designed to minimize chromium carbide precipitation during welding, which helps prevent intergranular corrosion.
What standard specifications do these stainless steel tubes meet?
These materials meet the ASTM A312/A312M (including A269, A312, and A270) standards, which cover seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel pipes and tubing.
What are the mechanical properties of TP304L?
TP304L has a minimum tensile strength of 485 MPa, a minimum 0.2% proof yield strength of 170 MPa, and a minimum elongation of 35% (in 50mm). Its maximum hardness is 90 Rockwell B (HR B) or 187 Brinell (HB).
Are TP304 and TP304L pipes magnetic?
No, both grades have a single-phase austenitic microstructure and are non-magnetic. However, they may become slightly magnetic if they undergo cold-working.
Is post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) necessary for TP304/304L?
Post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary for non-critical applications when using appropriate filler metals like 308 or 308L.
What inspections are conducted on these stainless steel pipes?
The pipes undergo 100% PMI (Positive Material Identification) testing. They are supplied with an EN10204.3.1B mill test certificate, and third-party inspections are accepted.
