    Introduction

TP304 (UNS S30400) and 304L (UNS S30403) are austenitic stainless steels widely used in welded tubing due to their excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and cost-effectiveness. Both belong to the 18-8 chromium-nickel family, with 304L being the low-carbon variant (L = "Low carbon") designed to minimize carbide precipitation during welding.

    Key Features

Microstructure Single-phase austenitic structure, non-magnetic (unless cold-worked), providing high ductility and toughness.
Corrosion Resistance Excellent in oxidizing environments (e.g., nitric acid, atmospheric corrosion). Resistant to general corrosion in freshwater, steam, and many organic acids. Susceptible to intergranular corrosion (IGC) if sensitized (e.g., prolonged exposure at 427–816°C), due to chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries.
High-Temperature Performance Retains strength up to ~870°C, suitable for service in moderate high-temperature applications (e.g., furnace parts, heat exchangers).
Weldability Easily welded by GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SAW. Use 308 or 308L filler metal to match corrosion resistance; post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is generally unnecessary for non-critical applications.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is the main difference between TP304 and TP304L stainless steel?
A: TP304L is the low-carbon version of TP304. It contains a maximum of 0.035% carbon (compared to TP304's higher limit), which minimizes carbide precipitation during welding and reduces susceptibility to intergranular corrosion.
Q2: What standards apply to TP304/304L welded tubing?
A: These materials are commonly specified under ASTM A312/A312M (for pipes), ASTM A269/A269M (for general service tubing), and ASTM A270/A270M (for sanitary tubing).
Q3: Are TP304 and TP304L stainless steels magnetic?
A: No, both materials have a single-phase austenitic microstructure and are non-magnetic in the annealed condition. However, they may become slightly magnetic after cold working.
Q4: What is the maximum service temperature for TP304/304L stainless steel?
A: These grades retain their strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, making them suitable for moderate high-temperature service up to approximately 870°C.
Q5: Is post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) required for TP304L?
A: Generally, post-weld heat treatment is not necessary for non-critical applications when using TP304L, as its low carbon content prevents sensitization during the welding process.
Q6: What are the primary applications of TP304/304L tubing?
A: Due to their excellent corrosion resistance and formability, they are widely used in the food and beverage industry, construction, automotive parts, pharmaceuticals, and general engineering applications.
