TP304L Stainless Steel Welded Pipes & Tubes - China Suppliers & Factory Stock Available for Fast Delivery
Introduction
TP304 (UNS S30400) and 304L (UNS S30403) are austenitic stainless steels widely used in welded tubing due to their excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and cost-effectiveness. Both belong to the 18-8 chromium-nickel family, with 304L being the low-carbon variant (L = "Low carbon") designed to minimize carbide precipitation during welding.
Key Features
Microstructure
Single-phase austenitic structure, non-magnetic (unless cold-worked), providing high ductility and toughness.
Corrosion Resistance
Excellent in oxidizing environments (e.g., nitric acid, atmospheric corrosion). Resistant to general corrosion in freshwater, steam, and many organic acids. Susceptible to intergranular corrosion (IGC) if sensitized (e.g., prolonged exposure at 427–816°C), due to chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries.
High-Temperature Performance
Retains strength up to ~870°C, suitable for service in moderate high-temperature applications (e.g., furnace parts, heat exchangers).
Weldability
Easily welded by GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SAW. Use 308 or 308L filler metal to match corrosion resistance; post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is generally unnecessary for non-critical applications.

FAQ
What is the difference between TP304 and TP304L stainless steel?
TP304L is the low-carbon version of TP304. The "L" stands for low carbon (maximum 0.035% compared to higher carbon levels in standard 304). This low carbon design minimizes harmful carbide precipitation during welding, ensuring better corrosion resistance in welded structures.
Are TP304/304L tubes magnetic?
No, both grades have a single-phase austenitic microstructure, which makes them inherently non-magnetic. However, they may develop slight magnetism after cold working.
What standard specifications apply to these stainless steel tubes?
These tubes strictly comply with ASTM A312/A312M (for seamless, straight-seam welded, and heavily cold worked welded austenitic stainless steel pipes), as well as ASTM A269 and ASTM A270 standards.
What are the primary applications of TP304/304L welded tubing?
Due to their high corrosion resistance and sanitary properties, they are widely used in the food and beverage industry, automotive manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, construction, and general engineering.
What is the maximum service temperature for TP304/304L stainless steel?
TP304/304L retains its mechanical strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures up to approximately 870°C, making it suitable for heat exchangers and moderate high-temperature applications.
Is post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) necessary for TP304L?
No, post-weld heat treatment is generally not necessary for non-critical applications because the low-carbon content of TP304L prevents sensitization and intergranular corrosion during the welding process.
