TP304L Stainless Steel Welded Pipes & Tubes - China Suppliers & Factory | Fast Delivery Available
Introduction
TP304 (UNS S30400) and 304L (UNS S30403) are austenitic stainless steels widely used in welded tubing due to their excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and cost-effectiveness. Both belong to the 18-8 chromium-nickel family, with 304L being the low-carbon variant (L = "Low carbon") designed to minimize carbide precipitation during welding.
Key Features
Microstructure
Single-phase austenitic structure, non-magnetic (unless cold-worked), providing high ductility and toughness.
Corrosion Resistance
Excellent in oxidizing environments (e.g., nitric acid, atmospheric corrosion). Resistant to general corrosion in freshwater, steam, and many organic acids. Susceptible to intergranular corrosion (IGC) if sensitized (e.g., prolonged exposure at 427–816°C), due to chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries.
High-Temperature Performance
Retains strength up to ~870°C, suitable for service in moderate high-temperature applications (e.g., furnace parts, heat exchangers).
Weldability
Easily welded by GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SAW. Use 308 or 308L filler metal to match corrosion resistance; post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is generally unnecessary for non-critical applications.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between TP304 and TP304L stainless steel?
TP304L is the low-carbon version of TP304. It has a maximum carbon content of 0.035%, which helps minimize carbide precipitation during welding, making it less susceptible to intergranular corrosion.
Are TP304 and TP304L stainless steels magnetic?
No, both TP304 and TP304L are austenitic stainless steels and are naturally non-magnetic. However, they may become slightly magnetic after cold working.
What are the primary applications of TP304L welded tubing?
Due to its excellent corrosion resistance and formability, TP304L is widely used in industries such as Food & Beverage, Construction, Automotive, Pharmaceuticals, and General Engineering.
Does TP304L require post-weld heat treatment (PWHT)?
Generally, post-weld heat treatment is not necessary for TP304L in non-critical applications because its low carbon content prevents sensitization at the grain boundaries during welding.
What standard specifications apply to these stainless steel pipes?
These pipes comply with standards such as ASTM A312/A312M for seamless and welded pipes, as well as ASTM A269/A269M and ASTM A270/A270M for general service and sanitary tubing.
What are the mechanical properties of TP304L?
TP304L has a minimum tensile strength of 485 MPa, a minimum yield strength of 170 MPa, a minimum elongation of 35%, and a maximum hardness of 90 HRB (or 187 HB).
