ASTM A269/270/213 TP316L Stainless Steel Seamless Tubes from China Suppliers | ZONSUN Factory
Introduction
ASTM A269 TP316L is the low-carbon variant of TP316, designed to eliminate intergranular corrosion (IGC) risks in welded components and sensitized structures. With a carbon content ≤0.035%, it avoids chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, making it ideal for applications where post-weld heat treatment is impractical or corrosive conditions are extremely severe. The inclusion of 2.0–3.0% molybdenum (Mo) ensures superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chemical attack, similar to TP316 but with enhanced weldability for critical environments.
Key Features
Low-Carbon Immunity to Intergranular Corrosion (IGC)
Carbon ≤0.035% means no chromium carbide (Cr23C6) precipitates at grain boundaries, even after welding or long-term exposure to sensitization temperatures. No post-weld heat treatment is required for most applications, reducing fabrication costs.
Molybdenum-Enhanced Localized Corrosion Resistance
Equivalent to TP316 in resistance to pitting/crevice corrosion in chloride environments (e.g., seawater, brine, or bleach solutions), making it suitable for harsh chemical processing.
Superior Weldability
Ideal for welded structures (e.g., pipelines, storage tanks) where heat-affected zones (HAZ) would otherwise become IGC-prone in higher-carbon grades. Commonly used in industries where non-destructive testing (NDT) of welds is critical but post-weld annealing is not feasible.
Wide Temperature Range Performance
Maintains ductility and toughness from cryogenic (−196°C, e.g., liquid nitrogen systems) to high-temperature service (up to ~650°C continuously, ~870°C short-term).
Austenitic Microstructure Purity
Fully austenitic matrix (no harmful phases like σ-phase) after solution annealing, ensuring uniform corrosion resistance and formability.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What makes ASTM A269 TP316L highly resistant to intergranular corrosion?
ASTM A269 TP316L features a low carbon content (≤0.035%), which prevents the precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries during welding or exposure to high temperatures. This eliminates the risk of intergranular corrosion (IGC) without needing post-weld heat treatment.
Why is Molybdenum added to TP316L?
TP316L contains 2.0% to 3.0% molybdenum (Mo), which significantly enhances its resistance to localized corrosion, such as pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in harsh chloride-rich environments like seawater or chemical processing plants.
What are the primary applications of ASTM A269 TP316L tubes?
Due to its high purity and corrosion resistance, it is widely used in sanitary and hygienic systems, food and dairy plants, beverage processing, pharmaceuticals, semiconductor manufacturing, marine and offshore applications, and medical laboratory equipment.
What specifications and testing procedures are applied to these tubes?
The tubes are manufactured in accordance with ASTM A269, A270, and A213 standards. They undergo 100% PMI testing, are certified with the EN10204.3.1B Mill Test Certificate, and are open to accepted third-party inspections.
What are the equivalent grades of ASTM A269 TP316L internationally?
Equivalent grades include 1.4404 in Germany (DIN, WNr), SUS316L in Japan (JIS), Z2CND17-12 in France (AFNOR), 316S11 in England (BS), X2CrNiMo17-12-2 under Euronorms (EN) and ISO, and 022Cr17Ni12Mo2 in China (GB).
