ASTM A269/270/213 TP316L Stainless Steel Seamless Tubes - China Suppliers & Factory Stock for Fast Delivery
Introduction
ASTM A269 TP316L is the low-carbon variant of TP316, designed to eliminate intergranular corrosion (IGC) risks in welded components and sensitized structures. With a carbon content ≤0.035%, it avoids chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, making it ideal for applications where post-weld heat treatment is impractical or corrosive conditions are extremely severe. The inclusion of 2.0–3.0% molybdenum (Mo) ensures superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chemical attack, similar to TP316 but with enhanced weldability for critical environments.
Key Features
Low-Carbon Immunity to Intergranular Corrosion (IGC):
Carbon ≤0.035% means no chromium carbide (Cr23C6) precipitates at grain boundaries, even after welding or long-term exposure to sensitization temperatures. No post-weld heat treatment is required for most applications, reducing fabrication costs.
Molybdenum-Enhanced Localized Corrosion Resistance:
Equivalent to TP316 in resistance to pitting/crevice corrosion in chloride environments (e.g., seawater, brine, or bleach solutions), making it suitable for harsh chemical processing.
Superior Weldability:
Ideal for welded structures (e.g., pipelines, storage tanks) where heat-affected zones (HAZ) would otherwise become IGC-prone in higher-carbon grades. Commonly used in industries where non-destructive testing (NDT) of welds is critical but post-weld annealing is not feasible.
Wide Temperature Range Performance:
Maintains ductility and toughness from cryogenic (−196°C, e.g., liquid nitrogen systems) to high-temperature service (up to ~650°C continuously, ~870°C short-term).
Austenitic Microstructure Purity:
Fully austenitic matrix (no harmful phases like σ-phase) after solution annealing, ensuring uniform corrosion resistance and formability.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: What makes ASTM A269 TP316L highly resistant to intergranular corrosion?
It features a low carbon content (≤0.035%), which prevents chromium carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries during welding or exposure to high temperatures.
Q2: What is the role of Molybdenum in TP316L stainless steel?
The addition of 2.0–3.0% Molybdenum significantly improves the material's resistance to localized corrosion, such as pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-rich environments.
Q3: In which industries is ASTM A269 TP316L commonly used?
It is widely applied in sanitary systems, food and beverage processing, semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceutical plants, marine applications, and medical equipment.
Q4: Does ASTM A269 TP316L require post-weld heat treatment?
No, post-weld heat treatment is generally not required because its low-carbon formulation eliminates the risk of sensitization during the welding process.
Q5: What inspections are standard for these tubes?
The standard inspections include 100% PMI (Positive Material Identification) testing, EN10204.3.1B mill test certification, and optional third-party inspections.
Q6: What delivery conditions are available for these stainless steel tubes?
They can be delivered as Cold Drawn, Annealed and Pickled, Polished, Bright Annealed, Sand Blasted, or Shot Blasted.
