ASTM A269/270/213 TP316L GRADE SS SMLS TUBE
Introduction
ASTM A269 TP316L is the low-carbon variant of TP316, designed to eliminate intergranular corrosion (IGC) risks in welded components and sensitized structures. With a carbon content ≤0.035%, it avoids chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, making it ideal for applications where post-weld heat treatment is impractical or corrosive conditions are extremely severe. The inclusion of 2.0–3.0% molybdenum (Mo) ensures superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chemical attack, similar to TP316 but with enhanced weldability for critical environments.
Key Features
Low-Carbon Immunity to Intergranular Corrosion (IGC): Carbon ≤0.035% means no chromium carbide (Cr23C6) precipitates at grain boundaries, even after welding or long-term exposure to sensitization temperatures. No post-weld heat treatment is required for most applications, reducing fabrication costs.
Molybdenum-Enhanced Localized Corrosion Resistance: Equivalent to TP316 in resistance to pitting/crevice corrosion in chloride environments (e.g., seawater, brine, or bleach solutions), making it suitable for harsh chemical processing.
Superior Weldability: Ideal for welded structures (e.g., pipelines, storage tanks) where heat-affected zones (HAZ) would otherwise become IGC-prone in higher-carbon grades. Commonly used in industries where non-destructive testing (NDT) of welds is critical but post-weld annealing is not feasible.
Wide Temperature Range Performance: Maintains ductility and toughness from cryogenic (−196°C, e.g., liquid nitrogen systems) to high-temperature service (up to ~650°C continuously, ~870°C short-term).
Austenitic Microstructure Purity: Fully austenitic matrix (no harmful phases like σ-phase) after solution annealing, ensuring uniform corrosion resistance and formability.
