    Introduction

ASTM TP317 refers to a specification for 317 stainless steel (UNS S31700), a molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel under standards such as ASTM A240/A240M for plates and sheets. It is designed for applications requiring enhanced corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-rich environments. This grade contains higher molybdenum (3–4%) compared to 316 stainless steel, improving its performance in aggressive chemical and marine settings

    Key Features

Superior Corrosion Resistance:  Excels in environments with chlorides (e.g., seawater, coastal areas) due to its high molybdenum content, which inhibits pitting and crevice corrosion.
Performs well in sulfuric acid (concentrations <15% and >85%) and organic acids, making it suitable for chemical processing equipment.
Maintains stability at high temperatures (up to 870°C) and resists scaling in oxidizing atmospheres.
Mechanical Properties: ~520 MPa (as-annealed), with elongation up to 40%, ensuring ductility for forming and welding.
≤90 HRB (Rockwell B), balancing strength and machinability.
Thermal Stability: ~16.3 W/m·K at 100°C, increasing to 21.58 W/m·K at 500°C, suitable for heat exchangers.
Linear expansion coefficient of 16×10⁻⁶/K (0–100°C), minimizing dimensional changes under thermal stress.
Weldability: Compatible with standard welding techniques (e.g., TIG, MIG). Post-weld annealing is recommended to restore corrosion resistance in critical applications.
